Satellite technology and Google maps make it easy for us to know where we are at any time.  But we also have a map in our minds.

You call the map inside your brain your “cognitive map”.  Rats can learn the way to go through a rat maze because they have a cognitive map.

Sometimes when I’m driving, I forget what my hands are doing, and my mind wanders off.  I arrive home but don’t remember getting there.

Your brain wants to know where you are.  All the time, it’s tracking your position and saving information to a brain map.
